Conclusion

This chapter mainly includes two parts. The first part covers major findings andsignificance of this study. The second part concerns some limitations of this studyand suggestions for future research in this area.Under the guidance of PP and the philosophy of event cognition, the authorstudies speech acts of mock politeness. The major findings and significance of thisstudy are listed as follows:Firstly, speech acts of mock politeness are so complex. To be more specific,they follow some maxim(s) of PP and at the same time flout other maxim(s). Whenperforming mock politeness, speakers first show courtesy to listeners by payingapologies, compliments, or presenting offers, etc. but they make listeners suffer fromlosing face in subsequent utterance. Such a turn in utterance causes event boundaries,which prompts listeners to segment event.Secondly, speakers in speech acts of mock politeness often change the currentevent by shifting time, spatial-temporal framework, causes or introducing newentities to achieve their communicative goals. These shifts are usually unpredictedand beyond listeners’ expectation.
