In example 7b, shang4 stands alone as the only verb across the sentence because  it  precedes  the  aspectual  marker,  le,  which  signals  a  completed  action.  In example 7c, shang4 takes the role of a locative preposition and satellite.    
Therefore, the syntactic status of shang4, and similar words, must be determined on a case-by-case  basis.  Specifically,  the  verb  form  often  used  in  motion  expressions  in Chinese  is  an  RVC,  in  which  Manner  and  Path  are  syntactically  compacted together, as  in  example  7a.  Furthermore,  independent  use  of  Path  verbs,  as  in  example  7b,  is also  pervasive  across  oral  utterances  and  written  texts  in  Chinese.  In  contrast,  Path elements  in  English  are  not  equipped  with  the  same  function  as  in  Chinese.  This supports the view that Chinese does not share a typological frame with English.  Zhang  (2007)  investigates  Chinese  from  both  synchronic  and  diachronic perspectives.  Zhang  regards  the  second  verb  or  the  third  verb  in  the  resultative  verb compound as a verb complement instead of a real verb; thus, his synchronic research backs  up  Talmy?s  classification  of  Chinese  as  a  satellite-framed  language.  From  a diachronic viewpoint, he discusses Classical Chinese verbs, pointing out that Chinese grammar  makes  Path  verbs  into  verb  complement.  He  argues  that  Classical  Chinese grammar turns verbs into verb complements.
