2.2 Previous Studies on Humor
The superiority theory is one of the most popular theories about humor whosecentral message is that human usually feel superior when facing some stupid, foolish,ugly ones or when meeting a defeated enemy. The theory can date back to Plato andAristotle. Plato holds the view that “malice or envy is at the root of comic enjoymentand that we laugh at the misfortunes of others for joys we do not share with them”(Raskin, 1985, p. 36). Aristotle expresses that the reason of laughter can be theresponse to the laughable person’s weakness, ugliness and their inadequacy (Palmer,1994). There’s also another famous statement from Thomas Hobbes that “the passionof laughter is nothing else but some sudden glory arising from some suddenconception of some eminence in ourselves, by comparison with the infirmity ofothers, or with our own formality” (Martin, 1998, p. 29). He also agrees that it is asign of pusillanimity to laugh at others constantly because the person who laughs atothers attempts to seek self confirmation by a favorable comparison with thelaughable ones ( Palmer, 1994, p. 94). The superiority theory is regarded quiteconvincing to interpret the mechanism of the production of humor in the 17thcentury.

Chapter 4 Analysis and Discussion

This chapter is dedicated to making a comprehensive analysis of the cognitivemechanism in implying humor of comedy skits under the theoretical framework ofECM+that has been mentioned in chapter three. In this chapter, section 4.1 and 4.2will present the collection of data, and section 4.3 focuses on the detailed analysis ofthe data from two perspectives respectively: within an event domain and across eventdomains. Then the author will give a general discussion and finally a summary ofthis chapter is presented.

4.1 Data Collection and Classification

The data that are going to be analyzed in this thesis are composed of 210 piecesof humorous fragments of Zhao Benshan’s comedy skits selected from the CCTVSpring Festival Gala from 1999 to 2011.
