Introduction
It is saying that if you want to learn about the
history of nineteen century of Briton, please read the novels of Thomas Hardy. May be it is aggravated, but from it we can learn that in Hardy’s novels the society is truly reflected in some aspects. And among Hardy’s novels-----Tess of the d’Urbervilles described a wronged woman by the poverty and the ideas of a seduced woman of the society in that time.
It is no doubt that Tess is one of the purest, kindest and loveliest women we can find in the novels. She is a good daughter who is always caring her family more than herself; she is also a good wife who loves her husband more than herself. But it is always make me think a lot why the kindest woman receives so much suffering? Can Tess have other better choices in her terrible situation? In the following, the author will give you some reasons to prove that the tragedy of Tess is inevitable.
1. General commentary and summary of Tess of the d’Urbervilles
As the title implies, Tess of the d'Urbervilles is basically the story a country girl, Tess D'urberfield. She lived in an age of transition, which added to her natural disposition toward a mecholy view of life. "She absorbed the values of Christianity and convention that cause most of the misery." Tess--a fresh and virginal daughter of nature" struggled against hypocritical morality with her contradictory qualities. She left her home to find employment at the d'Urbervilles because of her responsibility for her family's welfare. Alec who was a selfish, arrogant and capricious person took advantages of her innocence and physical exhausition to seduce her. After the baby's death, Tess wanted to live another life with her pride and independence. She worked as a dairymaid at the Talbothy's Dairy. Then she fell in love with Angel. Their spiritual love injected new blood for Tess. But his rejection of Tess on their wedding night, his limitations which couldn't free himself from the conventions put Tess into a dark world even more cruel than Alec's actions. Combing with the poverty, no message from her husband, her submission and responsibility for her family, she had to live with Alec. From here Tess had become a time bomb, if outside gave her some energies, she would explode. After Angel's fuller understanding of himself and the world, his return light the fire of Tess's love. She killed Alec with the hate for Alec and the love for Angel.
"Tess's last thorough resistance to violence and the end of ruining together with the oppression was the rising of her character and morals, even more is the highest mark of Hardy's critical realism in the creative writing road."
2. The inevitability of Tess's tragedy produced by outside causes
2.1 Tess's nature contradicted with hypocritical era and religion
"She was a fine and handsome girl--not handsome than some others, possibly-but her mobile peony mouth and others, possibly-but her mobile peony mouth and did add to colour and shape." Pure folk customs of Wessex and strong primitive views molded Tess's female figure who was beautiful, pure, virtuous and industrious. A childish heart was bundle into Tess's mature body. Unalterable feeling was in her heart, never infusing by the world . She just like a fairy maiden run out of the turbid nature. It was that pyre woman was pushed to the death by hanging. Indeed it exactly embodied slander and tread of human nature by hypocritical morality of Victorian culture and e
