Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 The Relationship between Imitation and Recitation
In this part, the thesis introduces the definitions of recitation both at home and abroad on thecharacteristics of the recitation as well as factors that influence the recitation.Recitation is defined as: “Recitation is saying a piece of writing aloud from memory” based on theCambridge International Dictionary of English.Recitation means that to read a reading material repeated until the reader can retell it in their ownwords. In Modern Chinese Dictionary5th, the recitation is described below: “Reading off the words that hadbeen read from memory”. Recitation acts a crucial role in computing knowledge, paying intellectualresources as well as developing abilities. So the readers could not acquire a language without recitation.Memory is one of the most important elements of recitation, however, it does not mean memorizesomething by rote. The process of thinking, understanding and memorizing should be united together. Onlyif the readers use all these skills together, can they acquire the books’ knowledge deeply.

2.2 Practical Writing
Definitions concerning practical writing are many and various. practical writing is defined by Ci Hai(1999) as the passage where general simple words are used during daily life, everyday work and study.Practical writing is generally inflexible in form. It is argued that practical writing consists of certain wordsand expressions which have a specific form and people turn to practical writing with the purpose ofcommunicating among individuals and/or groups and sometimes between individuals and groups as well.As a tool, practical writing is intended to spread information, transaction, communication that has longbeen developed in social activities, and in some cases, practical writing even serves as a kind of proof orevidence. As the society moves forward, people have come to communicate more frequently and in a morecomplex manner whether in life or work. Therefore, more and more roles are expected of practical writing.Designed to deal with actual matters, practical writing, with its practical characteristics, has quite oftendeveloped a conventional pattern.First of all,it is generally various kinds of organizations, companies and individuals that use practicalwriting in such social activities as work, study or daily life, aiming to do with all types of official andpersonal affairs. In this way it solve different kinds of problems and thus is of great practical value, while atthe same time it takes in varied language style.Speaking of English practical writing, what is referred to is a variety of English writings for solvingpractical problems. English practical writing or practical English writing can be classified intonon-literature English writing. In general, by practical English writing, people means the written documentsin fixed forms for some specific purposes. The English practical writing are widely different in styles, suchas personal letters, notices, telegraphs, telex, contracts, advertisements and so forth.
