Are these following four separate industries or separate divisions of one big industry?
Leisure/Recreation/Sport Management,
Travel/Tourism Management,
Hospitality/Hotel Management and
Event Management,
We understand that most of you have joined this program with a view to specialising in just one of the four specialised areas outlined above. As a student enrolled in a program with separate majors it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that each of the above operates totally independently of each other and that you should focus on just one of the areas.
In the real world, the global service industry does not operate in isolated and confined narrow sectors but in fact operates as one very large multifaceted industry. It is true that each of the above sectors has clearly defined functions and career opportunities but the similarities between the sectors are greater than the dissimilarities.
As your first major exercise we want you to select any ONE of the above four sectors identified by bullet points above. Having selected one sector we want you to identify what you see as similarities between your selected sector and EACH of the other THREE sectors and then we want you to do the same focusing on the dissimilarities with each of the other three sectors. Sometimes you may see similarities with each of the four sectors and at other times you might see similarities between only two or three of the sectors.
For each sector we would like you to find at least one definition, and preferably more
than one definition for each sector. HINT Look at the set text for this course which will supply at least one definition for each sector. We want you to identify what you see as similarities between your chosen sector and EACH of the other sectors. Clearly the more similarities you can identify the higher the mark you will obtain.
HINT If we were to choose say travel/tourism management we would suggest that this sector has a travel component which is also present in the leisure/recreation/sport management sector, the hotel/hospitality management sector and the event management sector. Why do we say this? Well, you have to travel somewhere to go on a vacation (tourism), to go on a day’s drive for a picnic (recreation), to visit most resorts or hotels (hospitality) and to attend an event. In other words each of these sectors is intimately involved with travel and travel companies no matter which sector you are looking at. In other words people operating in travel have involvement with tourism, leisure, hospitality and events.
We then want you to look for differences or dissimilarities (both words mean effectively the same thing). Again, the more differences you find the better will be
your mark.
HINT We would suggest that tourism must involve the participant in being away from his or her home environment for at least 24 hours. Whilst this would also be usual with hotel stays as you invariable stay in a hotel overnight, you can also use hotels for casual lunch time dining or evening drinking with friends. Leisure and recreation may not involve any overnight stay as much recreation and sport is carried out in ones home or home environment. Events can be heavily involved with the work environment as events are often associated with business such as trade shows or meetings. To make matters more manageable you need only compare your chosen sector
with each of the
