1.1 The purpose of the research研究目的

According to Grice’s (1975) cooperative principle, the writer isobliged to try to write a clear, relevant, truthful, informative, interesting, and memorable text,which imposes a serious pressure on present EFL learners. In terms of skills, producing acoherent, fluent, extended piece of writing is probably the most difficult thing there is to do inlanguage (Nunan, 2001:271). https://www.51lunwen.org/guidelines/ Most of the EFL learners feel frustrated in producing an excellentessay; on the other hand, college English teachers may find it a boring and unrewardingexperience to mark the students' homework. The diligent attention and careful comments justhas little impact on the students' subsequent writing. The probable reasons are likely thedifferent ages of students, variety of students' writing proficiency and educational background.How can EFL writing teachers promote the students' writing abilities through classroomteaching and marking their homework? The traditional teaching method makes teachers thedominant roles in classroom teaching and marking students' homework just by correcting theirgrammatical or spelling mistakes. Even when the homework has been marked for months, thestudents' writing proficiency has not been improved.Peer revision has been commonly used by some EFL teachers in the world; however, mostEnglish writing teachers and learners in China are not very familiar with this approach.According to the result of a survey in a small scale, most English writing teachers, bothEnglish major and non-English major, still adopt the traditional approach in grading thestudents' writing. Most college English writing teachers feel that it is a tough and unrewardingexperience of grading and commenting all the students' writing. Although grading the students'homework is an important process of language teaching, the students writing skills or abilitycan not be greatly enhanced with the traditional teaching approach.Based on the experimental results of previous researches, there will be unavoidably somedisadvantages of peer revision if it is not appropriately applied. For example, when the studentsare classified into many groups, each of them has the students of the same language proficiency;it will be hard for students to identify the mistakes in grammar and spelling, let alone themistakes in organization and content. Secondly, without the proper training of peer revision,the students even have no idea of operation in this approach, so the result will not be promising.Thirdly, teacher's feedback in the whole process of using peer revision is still essential to makeit more effective. Most teachers ignore the teachers' feedback when using peer revision, so thestudents are always confused about their peer students' mistakes and problems.
