摘要:阅读理解是高中最重要的部分之一,也是测试的关键部分。学生易学的语言和文化,主要是通过阅读,因此,良好的阅读能力,学生的英语学习是非常必要的。

1.1 Research Background
Traditional English teaching in China pays much attention to the vocabulary andgrammar learning while neglecting the cultural awareness. In order to change thissituation, the Ministry of Education of China issued the English Curriculum Standard ofOrdinary High School (experimental draft) (the following shortened as "the standard")in 2003. The standard demands the English teaching of senior high school shouldcultivate students' cultural awareness and improve their cross-cultural communicativecompetence. Cultural awareness contains learning necessary intercultural knowledge,promoting understand of culture and forming cultural awareness, so as to lay thefoundation for developing the intercultural communicative competence. LearningEnglish must keep in touch with the culture of English. To learn English culture willbenefit students' life experience and expand their scope of knowledge.


Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Language and Culture
Before discussing the relationship between English cultural background knowledgeand English reading teaching in senior high school, we should make clear the definitionof the culture and language.The definition of culture is made by Anthropologist Edward Tylor (Taylor),and ithas a very big effect to the following research. His famous definition is: ”the so-calledculture and civilization including knowledge and belief,art, morals,law, custom,and amember of society and the individual for any other ability, habits." After that,anthropologists gave the culture many definitions. Generally there are two kinds oftrend, one is generalized definition.It considers that the culture is a creation from human beings, not animals. Itincludes all of the achievement of human beings, namely culture refers to the physicaland mental achievement of human beings (XingFuYi, 2000:8). The other one is thenarrowly definition. It only is the mental achievement. Most of these definitions are stillbased on the definition of Taylor. Culture is the combination of the physical and mentalachievement created by human beings, and the culture is divided into three levels. Thefirst level is the material culture; it is created by human beings subjectively. The secondlevel is system culture, including the political and economic system, and legal, literature,interpersonal relationship, habitual behavior, and so on. The third level is psychologicallevel,or called culture, including the human beings' values,ways of thinking, aesthetictemperament and interest, moral sentiment. Religious sentiment and the nationalpsychology and so on.
People divide all kinds of cultural connotation into different groups,and at thesame time,they also divide the culture into different kinds. Chinese foreign Chinesescholar zhang thinks that the culture is divided into "knowledge culture" and"communication culture" (zhang, 1991). The so-called "knowledge culture, refers to thedirectly affect in the communication in different cultural background.
