There are thousands of codes of pronunciationinstead of the mere 25 codes of pronunciation. The number of these codes in practical usereaches 9,353. Adding up to the codes which have been created lately, it will amount to10,516. As of the statistical characters in the Chinese book, it can total up to more than 80,000or 90,000. According to Herder’s idea, the language of Chinese is an ethnical dictionary, onereferring to courtesy and self-cultivation. The language varies from one province to another,which is the colorful local dialect. Even it is diversely employed by different class of thepeople and various styles of books. Therefore, people make great efforts to master thelanguage just in order to acquire a practical tool, but without considering what the tool will beapplied to. When practicing Hieroglyphic, the people must concentrate upon the forms andstrokes of the characters, resulting in what is elusive or arbitrary as the striking factor of theChinese people’s thought pattern. Welson holds the view that supposing that we deny theChinese and the western nationalities are sharply different---the Chinese are born conservative,while the western advanced, we have to explore other reasons for what leads to theadvancement many people have been seeking for. Although China used to have a quantity ofadvantages, it is greatly backward in later four and five centuries. The Chinese minds areconfined to such a complicated characters and thought pattern, driving the nation’s energy orpassion largely consumed on the studying of this language. It is better worth exploring.Calling all of the Asian Language “Mongolian Language”, Windey compares it with English:English is some broader, deeper, richer, more suitable for subtle ideas of a mature nationality.In the evolution of a nationality, language and thought should step together. If one languagelags behind thought, it will be an obstacle for thought pattern. So does Mongolian language.


Chapter Ⅱ Theoretical Foundation


To obtain a better awareness of the thought pattern between Chinese and Westerners, thefirst section deals with the theory Contrastive Analysis. In the following, what is syntacticalstructure is illustrated in this thesis. In the end the author generally compares the different TPsbetween Chinese and Westerners.2.1.The theory of Contrastive Analysis(CA)


2.1.1. The theory of Contrastive Analysis
Contrastive linguistic in nature is the outcome of Wilhelm von Humboldt’s view on worldlinguistics. In 1941, it firstly came up with American linguist B.Whorf (1897-1941) in his“Language and Logic”. Charles Fries made an assumption model of CA in the paper“Teaching and learning English as a foreign language” published in 1945.During 1957American great linguist Lado laid the basic principles of CA mode in his classics “Linguisticsacross Culture”. Odlin(1971:79) indicates : as an approach to predicting the possibledifficulties and errors from a language learner, the applicability of CA has been confirmed alot.
