;factors  which  affect  English  learners’ critical  thinking  abilities  were  displayed  in  English  writing.  Therefore,  the  object  of this  thesis  mainly  integrated  previous  theories  into  elements  of  critical  thinking  in order to assess English writing.  The  standard  of  senior  high  school  English  curriculum  points  out  that  on  the basis of requirements of knowledge and their cognitive levels, pedagogy should focus on  the  English  learners’  ability  including  analyzing  and  solving  problems  in  English class  to  improve  their  critical  thinking  ability.  The  teaching  activities  should  be organized  with  creativity  and  imagination  to  enhance  their  motivation  (Ministry  of Education, 2013). English pedagogy aims at encouraging English learners to establish their own structure with previous knowledge and enrich writing topics. However, lots of  teachers  focus  on  linguistic  knowledge  instead  of  their  cognitive  thoughts  (Li Liwen, 2010). And the problem of cultivating English learners’ abilities in teaching is increased.

Chapter 2 Literature Review 

The  first  part  introduces  the  various  definition  of  critical  thinking  found  by achievement scholars and professors. The second part reviews the proceeding relevant studies  on  critical  thinking  ability  from  abroad  and  at  home.  The  third  part  puts forward by statement in English writing. Factors of critical thinking entail in next part and theoretical elements of critical thinking are presented in final part.

2.1 Critical Thinking 

Critical thinking is defined by many scholars who have explored connotation for many  years  and  the  concept  of  critical  thinking  has  attracted  more  attention  in  the field of language learning and teaching. From  broad  and  narrow  perspectives  to  analyze  critical  thinking,  the  former theory  mainly  refers  to  ability  of  solving  problem  including  identifying  assumption, clarifying  evaluation.  The  later,  referring  to  the  emotion,  social  cognition,  attitudes, habits  of  mind,  are  based  on  language  philosophy,  being  more  diversification  in definition of critical thinking. First  of  all,  Ennis  (1962)  proposed  that  critical  thinking  is  based  on  objective individual  experience  with  the  reasonable  reflective  thinking  by  deciding  what  to believe or what to do and demonstrated the conception of critical thinking with clarify, reasonable and purposeful .
