Chapter 5 Conclusion
5.1 Major Findings
This research mainly explores the situation of teachers’ present cognition ofcultivating students’ critical thinking abilities in Guangxi senior high school Englishteaching. Based on the analysis in the above chapter, major findings can be concludedas follows.
Concerning the overall present condition of teachers’ cognition of criticalthinking concepts, most senior high school English teachers have a certainunderstanding of critical thinking. But it is not concrete and systematical. Most of theteachers know that the critical thinking abilities include two perspectives of cognitiveskills and affective disposition. However, some teachers are not quite sure whetherspecific skills and critical thinking disposition belong to critical thinking or not.According to the results, more than 70% teachers hold that they have a goodunderstanding of the definition of critical thinking ability. However, nearly half ofteachers are not quite sure whether the affective characters belong to critical thinking.Moreover, most English teachers do not have a quite clear idea of specific cognitiveskills and their sub-skills.
As for teachers’ attitude, most senior high school English teachers in Guangxihold a positive attitudes towards critical thinking cultivation in English teaching.However, there are still some teachers hold that it is optional and not necessary to beincluded in every type of lesson. From the results, more than 90% English teachersthink that the cultivation of critical thinking is an important task in English teaching.Most of them believe that the cultivation of students’ critical thinking abilities willhelp to improve students’ English scores in college entrance examination. Accordingto the analysis of questionnaires and answers of interview question three, it can beknown that some teachers mainly cultivate students’ critical thinking abilities in reading and vocabulary class. And the cultivation of critical thinking ability is easilyignored in other types of classes.
