1.2.1 Research Purpose
This study sets out to reveal the current situation of English teachers’ perceptions of critical thinking and their teaching in senior high school, examine the critical thinking level of Senior One students in Shanghai and investigate the usefulness of reading-writing integrated English instruction in cultivating senior high school students’ critical thinking. In other word, the paper is designed to answer the following three specific questions: First, what is the current situation of English teachers’ viewpoints and teaching of critical thinking in senior high school? Second, what critical thinking level can Senior One students in Shanghai reach? Third, what effects does reading-writing integrated English instruction have on the cultivation of senior high school students’ critical thinking?
Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Core Concepts
2.1.1Definitions of Critical thinking
The concept of critical thinking is derived from two ancient Greek words. “Kriticos” and “kriterion” are the two Greek etymologies of the term “critical thinking”. “Kriticos” means “proper judgment” and “kriterion” refers to “criterion”. Hence, from the etymological perspective, the implication of the term “critical thinking” is “making proper judgments based on certain criterion” (Paul and Elder 2012: 8-9).
Classic definitions of critical thinking are bountiful. Researchers have offered many definitions of critical thinking. Robert Ennis (1993) described critical thinking as reasonable, reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or what to do, placing a clear emphasis on informed decision making. Gerald Nosich (2008: 51) defined critical thinking as “learning how to think well, on which the thinking meets high standards of quality such as accuracy, clearness, importance, and sufficiency”.
One leading definition of critical thinking is developed by a Delphi consensus panel of 46 experts, including leading scholars such as Robert Ennis, Peter Facione, and Richard Paul organized by the American Philosophical Association (APA). The scholars recognized this complexity by offering a broad definition:
We understand critical thinking to be purposeful, self-regulatory judgment which results in interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference, as well as explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, or contextual considerations upon which that judgment is based.
