1.0 Introduction

After Wal-Mart and Carrefour, Tesco is the third largest retailer in the globe, which is measured by revenues. With stores in fourteen countries across the world, Tesco is the leader of grocery market in UK, Thailand, and Malaysia. In UK, Tesco has an astonishing market share of 30%. Jack Cohen founded the company firstly in 1919, when he started to sell remanent groceries from a stall. In 2001 Tesco was involved with the grocery worldwide and got a good share in international GroceyWorks. After the transition, Tesco has achieved good results in following years. In UK, Tesco is the largest retailing seller and has over 360,000 employees in the globe. (Michael, 1999)In addition to UK, Tesco also have branches in countries such as China, Japan and Turkey. The expansion to countries worldwide is part of Tesco’s strategy of diversifying and business growth. In addition to the strengths already developed in UK, Tesco also caters for local needs in different countries. Divided into six formats, characterized by different size and the range of sold products, Tesco’s stores in UK are as follows, Tesco Extra, Tesco Superstores, Tesco Metro, Tesco Express and one shop. Tesco has an international expansion strategy, just as other large corporations. In other countries, Tesco keeps sensitive to local environment by entering into joint ventures, for example, Samsung Group in South Korea. When talking of the cooperate strategy, the heart of the Tesco expansion strategy has always been the innovation of technologies. “Every little helps” was the main advertising slogan. In 2009, Tesco used “change for good” phrase as its advertising slogan, which was only allowed for charity use. (Anonymous, 2003)
