actual applied use is very weak. ThirdlyEnglish –Chinese and Japanese-English address forms comparative study are very universal,but Chinese-Japanese address forms comparative study is less. Using politeness principles toanalyze Chinese –Japanese address forms comparative study is almost zero. So this thesis triesto fill the gap in this area to help us ignore pragmatic failure in cross cultural communication.Obviously, we can’t neglect the significance of the study. Here the author divides thesignificance of the study into two parts, one is internal guide significance, and the other isexternal. As we know address forms is the first step to communicate with each other, theyreflect the speaker and hearer’s identity, family and social status，intimacy or remoteness oftheir relationship as well as their likes and dislikes. What’s more, we should consider thecontext factors when we choose address forms. Otherwise we will cause communicationalfailure. This thesis presents us politeness principles to guide us to choose appropriate addressforms.The external guide significance consists of two practical parts. With the economicalglobalization, learning foreign language become more and more frequencies. The first one isthat study can help us how to teach and learn Chinese and Japanese to some extent. As teachers,they can use this study to explain to students the differences between Chinese and Japaneseaddress form system, and the correct usage from politeness principles and culture. At last let thestudents understand them deep. As students, the study can tell them which is appropriate, andthey should know why they are appropriate or not so as to use them correctly. The second oneis that the study can help us receive successful communication in cross cultural communication.The conclusion of this study can clearly point out the different influences between Chinese andJapanese address forms as social behaviors. Different politeness principles of Chinese andJapanese guide us to choose and evaluate which address forms are correct. Learning the deepmeaning under the surface of the address forms, it is an effective way to avoid communicationfailure. This study can cultivate us communication competence during cross culturalcommunication and teaching and learning process.

 

1.3 Layout of the Thesis
This thesis mainly adopt the way of comparative analysis (CA)，because comparison is adirect and effective approach to identify two similar matters. And a comparative study is alsothe best choose for guiding foreign language teaching, learning. and interculturalcommunication．Samples are collected from three channels in the thesis：Chinese and Japanese dailyconversation address forms books, other famous authoritative articles and TV programs．Theanalysis firstly classifies address forms into four parts: kinship address forms, social addressforms, pronouns of address forms and polite address forms, even though there are manydifferent classifications according to different scholars. The way of CA in this thesis hasdiagram trees, frame and so on.
