Part I Introduction

1.1Background of the Study
Address forms are the basic element in our verbal communication in human life. Theypossess the functions of establishing, maintaining, weakening and strengthening theinterpersonal relationship between participants. The denotation and connotation of addressforms are very abundant and profound. They not only reflect the social relationship betweenparticipants, but also show deep cultural meanings. They plays an extremely important role insmooth development of the communicative process ， especially for cross-culturalcommunication. The inappropriate use of address forms can directly cause communicationfailure. So how to use them appropriately caught abroad and at home scholars’ eyes. Regardingthe study of address forms, different scholars have different views to research. Differentcountries have different research process. Let’s review address forms study at home and abroad.In west countries, address forms study roughly began in the 1950’s.Since then ，sociolinguists and psycholinguists have received some remarkable achievements in the study ofaddress forms．They have presented address systems and the rules that govern the choice ofaddress forms. Among them, the most renowned study on address forms is done by Brown andGilman in the 1950s，They’ve made detailed study on the usage of V form(the term Brown andGilman use to designate the deferential pronoun in any of the languages, taking the first letterfrom Latin vos,which is analogous to“您”(nin)in Chinese)and T form(the familiar pronoun，from Latin “ tu”，which is similar to‘你’(ni) in Chinese)．Later in the 1960s and 1970s，theaddress form system of American English was analyzed by Brown and Ford(1961;1964) andErvin—Tripp(1972)．Ervin—Tripp (1972) took a quite different approach to the study ofAmerican English address forms. She presents the address form system as a series of choicesusing the computer flow Chart format.In China, the scholars also believe that the choice of address forms is governed by anumber of social factors，The relevant studies have been carried out from different perspectivesranging from systematic description of the main forms of address forms to the investigation ofrules governing their usage．Important researches include those made by ChaoYuenren(1956)，Zhu Wanjin(1983)，Chen Songcen(1989)，Tian Huigang(1998)．In Japan, there are a lot of scholars who are interested in address forms. Among them, Mr.鈴木孝夫 is one of the most famous representatives. He divided address forms into many aspectssuch as kinship address, social relationship address and so on.Above researches review, we can found that though fruitful，are only confined to the scopeof linguistics and sociolinguistics．In these years more and more scholars research them withpragmatics. This is a new research area and viewpoint. Especially for cross-culturalcommunication, this initiative can help us analyze and understand what communication error,why we made this mistake. Through this way we can dig the deep reason why we will causethis failure.

1.2 Significance of the Study
From the above review, we can make a conclusion. Firstly from macro perspective, thoughaddress forms study is colorful, the viewpoints are limited, only combined with linguistics itselfor sociolinguistics.
