5.1 Summary of Research
In this thesis, the author seeks to make cultural linguistic research based on the theory ofpoliteness principles, to analyze Sino-Japanese address forms. It makes comparisons ofSino-Japanese address forms according to its classification. What’s more, the author puts thiscomparison into pragmatic field, particularly into politeness principles. Nowadays,communications between Chinese and Japanese become frequencies. The usage of addressforms in Chinese and Japanese have a big difference, and it is easy to cause pragmatic failure ifwe can’t use it properly in cross-culturalcommunication. In Japan, they usually use only professional or official title without surname toaddress someone face to face, it will be considered very polite. But in Chinese, this usage is less,if you want to show your respect you should add his or her surname. So if Chinese addressJapanese adding surname face to face, it will cause pragmatic failure. In the same way, ifJapanese address Chinese without adding surname, it also causes communicational gap.Because Chinese think adding surname reflect respect more. As an integral part of language，Address forms are unavoidably under the influence of their native cultures. A polite addressform can yield twice the result with half the effort. So politeness is the key factor to receive asuccessful communication. However, there was no pure language and culture without beingaffected by others. In a sense, the history of human being is the history of civilization.Civilization is close to politeness. Politeness principles vary from country to country. Thisthesis reviews some famous politeness principles in Western countries, China and Japan. Eventhough, they are different in some aspects, but the similarities are also obvious. Some politenessprinciples mix multi-cultures, especially western politeness principles by Leech and Brown&Levinson. So this thesis firstly compares with different politeness principles, and thenanalyzes the comparisons of Sino-Japanese address forms both in different politeness principlesand the same politeness principles. It is interesting that different politeness principles formdifferent address forms. It inspires us to explore the underlying cultural reasons. Through tablecharts, we can find their similarities and differences clearly. The analysis of cultural reasonsgives us a clear impression why they are different or similar and help us further understandthese distinctions readily.
