摘要：People in different regions or countries have their specific English expressions when they speak or write in English. The Englishes branded with varied cultures make English more inclusive, more diversified and more flexible.

1 .1 English Globalization and Varieties of English
As a tool for international communication, English is used and studied widely in the world, which results in its localization or nativization. Different regions or countries vary from each other because they have different histories, cultures, traditions, politics, economies and life styles. People in different regions or countries have their specific English expressions when they speak or write in English. The Englishes branded with varied cultures make English more inclusive, more diversified and more flexible, and the "correct" standard becomes more "relative". British English and American English are not considered as the only two existing standard Englishes, but just as the two English varieties used in the two different countries" (Wang Rongpei 1991:2). "Apart from British English and American English, there are other Englishes such as Canadian English, Australian English, New Zealand English, Indian English, South African English, Singapore English, Malta English, Zambia English, Hongkong English, Japanese English."(Wan Changsheng, 1994: 36)
Quirk (1985) divides regional English varieties into three kinds according to the regional environment of language use. The first type of English is in the United Kingdom and such countries as the United States of America, New Zealand and Canada where there‘ are many immigrants from Britain who speak English from generation to generation. Quirk regards their English as a native language (ENL). The second are used in the countries like India, Singapore, and Malaysia where the immigrants from Britain live among the local inhabitants. These varieties are English as a second language (ESL). The third kind of English varieties spoken by other countries are English as a foreign language (EFL).
Kachru, B.B. (1985) proposes the three concentric circles to view the English varieties, which are similar to Quirk's division. The inner circle refers to the traditional culture and linguistic bases of English (ENL); the outer represents the institutionalized non-native varieties (ESL); the expanding circle includes the regions where the performance varieties of the language are used essentially in EFL contexts.
