摘要:The present study also has some implications for the pedagogy relating to thesecond language acquisition. So for the present progressive aspect, which is acquiredlater and used less than the common used ones, such as the simple present and simplepast and so on. The findings in the present study can certainly provide the Englishlanguage teachers with better knowledge of the present progressive aspect use by theEFL learners in China, which will, in turn, make teachers to provide better guidanceto their students while teaching the present progressive aspect use. The students, onthe other hand, are hoped to benefit from it too.

It is obvious that making researches on learners of abroader range of language background will broaden the view on understanding oflanguage acquisition. Thus, this thesis on Chinese vocational English learners inChinese context is an attempt to examine the present progressive tense in a differentview.Secondly, based on the literature, it is easy to find that until now the focus ofmany researches on the progressive aspect is in a cognitive view or about its history.As for its pragmatic functions, related studies are relatively less. In this regard, thepresent study focuses on the progressive aspect, which is not easy for learners to learn.Besides, during the process of teaching and learning the English progressive aspect asa second or foreign language, it is accepted that the progressive aspect itself needsmore time and effort. Thus, it is necessary to study the English progressive aspectthoroughly—both theoretically and practically.Thirdly, through the review on literature on this aspect, it is found that dataobtained by most of the previous studies have depended on the spontaneousproduction of very few learners. As for the serious quantitative analyses, such kindof data are considered to be not reliable enough and even worse it is also likely toresult in inconsistent findings. So, researchers began to attempt to resort to thoseobjective data with a large scale by using more and more participants. And as weknow, the corpus-based approaches to the investigation of the different kinds oflanguages have attracted the interest of many researchers and become more and moreimportant in linguistic research in recent years. The main reason for it is that thecorpus linguistic approach has obvious three characteristic features---authenticity ofcomputability of corpus data, text corpora, and probability in text corpora. Underthe help of corpora, it can alleviate or even remove the inefficiencies in thesmall-scale study of the learner language to a great extent, and researchers canconduct either qualitative or quantitative analysis of the learner language. Thus, thethesis adopts the corpus linguistic approach to do the research.

 

1.3 The Significance and Purposes of the Study
Students must learn how to use English progressive aspect appropriately whilewriting or speaking them in order to take part in the communities in which they wishto interact with. In unfamiliar situations, they are apt to rely on transfer from their firstlanguage and culture, causing those in the target culture to wrongly view such errorsas wrong uses of tenses or lack of “be” verbs. The appropriate use of Englishprogressive aspect is also crucial if learners are to correctly interpret the force ofutterances they hear. Unfortunately, instruction in the area of English progressiveaspect has tended to be restricted to classroom environment or mainly tends to dealwith tests, such as multiple choices test, translation tests and so on.
