Abstract

With the rapid development of mass media and their increasingly more powerful influence upon people’s daily life, news discourse, the most important public mode of language use through which information is diffused in modern society, has been gaining more and more concern from discourse analysts. Under this trend, CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) won wide popularity with its purpose of disclosing the relationships among language, power and ideology through the studies on https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/ publicdiscourses. speech reporting has become a focus of study owing to the essential role it plays in news reporting.
    Early studies on speech reporting were mainly confined in the field of literary criticism, which focused on the syntactic operations about the form and rhetorical features of literary discourses. Since the 1990s, with the emergence and spread of CDA, studies of speech reporting have shown great interest in nonliterary public discourse and have paid much attention to speech reporting in situated media discourses with their specific historical and social contexts. In this thesis, we will take a discourse-pragmatic perspective to the analysis of speech reporting in news discourse.
The thesis draws on Fairclough's three-dimensional framework to reveal the ideology of economic news discourse. The comparison between the speech reporting in five newspapers (China Daily, Global Times, Financial Times, New York Times and Business Week) in Chinese and English about China’s GDP surpassing Japan. It is conducted from three angles: modes of speech reporting, news sources and reporting verbs. Our investigation reveals that English news reports are inclined to use more “unidentified sources” and the mode of “Preseted Direct Speech” than Chinese. However, the general impression we get is that Chinese reports are more concerned with the event, while American reports focus on the reasons for the surface, being a little bit critical of Chinese government which should take on more responsibility in the world. .
The whole thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter one is an introduction of the studies. Chapter two is literature review about news discourse and theories of speech reporting and the previous studies of CDA. Chapter three devotes to the comparison of reporting modes. Chapter four is a comparison of news sources. Chapter five will make a comparative discussion of reporting verbs. Chapter six summarizes the major findings and limitations of the present study, and puts forward some suggestions for future research.

近年来，新闻作为信息传播的主要途径己为越来越多人关注，由于大众传播媒体的影响愈加广泛，人们对它的研究也越来越多。批评性语篇分析（CDA）盛行于此时。它的目的是通过对大众语篇的研究来揭示语言、权利和意识形态之间的多重关系。
    有关于转述言语的研究历来局限于文学语篇，而且其研究内容主要涉及转述引语的形式特征和修辞功能。然而现在，随着批评话语分析的兴起，人们认识到转述言语是媒体语篇，必须将之语篇和社会历史语境结合在一起研究。因此，本文将进行建具体语篇和语境上的研究。
