摘要:The author makes a comparative study on the usage of intensifiers in English M.A.theses written by American English-Major-Postgraduates and ChineseEnglish-Major-Postgraduates in this thesis. It aims to probe into the characteristics ofintensifiers used by Chinese English-Major-Postgraduates and find out the similaritiesand differences on the use of intensifiers between the two corpora and then obtainsome enlightenment on English vocabulary teaching.

As is mentioned in the passage above, intensifiers can fulfill interpersonalfunction by accurately expressing the speaker’s tone and attitude. Hence, intensifiershave been used more and more widely and many related researches have beenconducted. However, the researchers mainly focus on the use of intensifiers,especially amplifiers, by college English learners in a comparatively low academiclevel. Meanwhile, the study about downtoners is rare. For these reasons above, thecurrent study attempts to investigate the use of intensifiers (amplifiers anddowntoners) in Chinese English-Major-Postgraduates’ writings and AmericanEnglish-Major-Postgraduates’ writings. Without doubt, the previous studies will shedlight on this thesis.The present study is a corpus-based research, which is based on analysis of largedatabases of real language examples stored on computer. A corpus-based researchtakes advantage of authentic proofs that are different from other approaches in nature.The significance of corpus-based study is that the application of empirical dataensures the researchers to make a more objective statement and that the richness oflinguistic evidences can enable researchers to have a valid and reliable analysis ofthe language features and phenomena.In this thesis, Corpus-based comparative investigations can help English learnersand teachers in China find out the similarities and differences in the use ofintensifiers between Chinese learners and native speakers and have a betterunderstanding of the usage of intensifiers. This author chooses M.A. theses assubjects so that the results and findings will give helpful suggestions to Chinesepostgraduates majoring in English for the composition of M.A. theses and strengthentheir awareness to take intensifiers seriously.

 

1.4 Organization of the Thesis
This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One serves as an introduction of the whole thesis. It presents some basicissues about the current study including research background, research objectives,the significance of the research, and the overall organization of the thesis.Chapter Two reviews the theoretical framework of the study and comments theprevious studies on intensifiers. It mainly gives a brief introduction aboutintensifiers, collocation and Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis.Chapter Three is devoted to the introduction of the research methodology. Itincludes four sections: research question, subject of the study, instruments employedand the procedures of data analysis.Chapter Four focuses on the presentation and discussion of the findings of thestudy. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are combined in this thesis forexamining the similarities and differences of the usage of intensifiers betweenChinese English-Major-Postgraduates and American English-Major-Postgraduates.Intensifiers are analyzed from the aspects of frequency and collocation.Chapter Five concludes the thesis by summing up the major findings of theresearch. In addition, it states the pedagogical implications and points out thelimitations of the study and puts forward some suggestions for further study.
