摘要:This thesis has made a tentative research on Chinese college students'impromptu speeches by applying the theory of metadiscourse. This chapter will firstlysummarize the findings of this thesis based on the analysis in Chapter four, and then itwill point out the contributions it has made. Lastly, it will reveal the limitations ofthe present study and give suggestions for further study
how the metadiscourse resources are used by the speakers to establishinterpersonal relationships between the audience and themselves. As has beenmentioned repeatedly, the functions of metadiscourse are to enable the speaker toinvolve the audience in his or her argument, to show their awareness of their audienceand communicative with each other to convey the persuasive messages. The majorfindings can be summed up in the following points:First of all, from a quantitative way, it is shown that metadiscourse features areused frequently in the present corpus. There are over 1618 metadiscourse resources inall in 10620 words with a frequency of one every 6.6 words. The average length ofone imprompUi speech in the collected data is about 177 words with 30metadiscoursal resources in each.Secondly, between the two main categories, there are more interactionalmetadiscourse resources than interactive ones, occupying 65.1 % and 34.9%respectively. This prominent phenomenon may be the result of the characteristics andpurpose of ihc specific genre of impromptu speech. Since the impromptu speech isshort in general, il is relatively easier For the speakers to make it coherent and guidethe audience; instead, it requires more emphasis on the rhetorical functions of theargument. lairlhermore, among all the sub-categories, there are imbalancedproportions of them all. That is to say, engagement markers are of the highestfrequency, taking up a little more than a fourth of all metadiscourse, followed bysay, we need to minimize the influence of negative factors, to take a good look atmetadiscourse and use it with a proper proportion.To sum up, the research findings may illustrate to some extent how the speakeremploys metadiscourse resources to realize the interpersonal interaction and conveyshis persuasive message. It contributes to the construction of the theory ofmetadiscourse and offers some insights into the genre-specific analysis ofmetadiscourse as a whole.
5.2 Implications of the Present Study
As has been said, the present study focuses on the interpersonal functions ofmetadiscourse in Chinese college students' impromptu speeches and it has both atheoretical and a pedagogical contributions.First, through the analyses and findings, the importance of employingmetadiscourse in impromptu speeches has been proved, and there proves to be anevident need to include metadiscourse to express interpersonal functions. By showingthe importance and detailed uses, it explicitly shows to readers that we should beaware of metadiscourse uses when making impromptu speeches. For example, ifspeakers have a clear awareness of the audience, they will know their audience andengage them more, predicating what will be common sense lo them and what needfurther explaining. The research data arc some representatives of successfulimpromptu speeches by Chinese college students, so this supplies a proof for collegestudents to increase their awareness of using metadiscourse.More importantly, this thesis has a pedagogical orientation in thai it provides uswith an important implications for classroom practice, especially Hl'I, speaking.According to 1 lyland (2005), an awareness of metadiscourse offers students threemain advantages. Firstly, it helps them to belter understand the cognitive demandsthat texts make on audience and ihe ways speakers can assist them lo processinformation.
