摘要:This thesis has made a tentative research on Chinese college students'impromptu speeches by applying the theory of metadiscourse. This chapter will firstlysummarize the findings of this thesis based on the analysis in Chapter four, and then itwill point out the contributions it has made. Lastly, it will reveal the limitations ofthe present study and give suggestions for further study

And thirdly, it allows them to negotiate this stance with audience.Although the significance of metadiscourse was largely recognized in languageteaching, but until recently, was largely neglected as teachers focused instead oncontents. It means that students can not make their meanings received andacknowledged effectively by merely being taught grammatical patterns and textualstructures. Teachers should at the first place be conscious of metadiscoursalknowledge and instruct them in metadiscourse using models and finally offeropportunities for them to practice speaking within the socio-rhetorical framework oftheir target communities.One thing that needs to be noted is that metadiscourse playing an important rolein impromptu speeches doesn't mean that the more metadiscourse features we use, thebetter. Students need to find a balance between the expressing of propositionalmeanings and metadiscourse features to better express their arguments.In addition, as has been mentioned before, the previous studies on metadiscourseare mainly on writing, especially academic writing, thus this thesis opens up a newangle for its application and gives some hints on future research on impromptuspeeches.
5.3 Limitations and Suggestions for Further Study
Due to the limitations of conditions, time and space, this study, thoughcontributive, has inevitable limitations.The first major limitation of the present study is that the corpus set for it is notenough both in quantity and in range. There are only 60 speeches collected and all ofthem are by Chinese college students. Were there more data, the results would bemore comprehensive and persuasive. And a more persuasive study can be made bycomparing the impromptu speeches made by Chinese college students andEnglish-speaking college students, from which we can clearly see the differences ofmetadiscourse use in this genre and get the characteristics of each. A morecomprehensive study which includes a contrastive analysis of SFL speakers andnative speakers is to be expected in the future.Secondly, although the present author tries hard to make sure that allmetadiscourse resources has been listed and correctly classified, it is inevitable thatsome might have been missed or misclassified. Another limitation is that although theauthor makes every effort to be objective, it is still not possible to eliminatesubjectivity. These two limitations should also be attributed to the imperfection ofmetadiscouse for that it is still a little fuzzy in its identification and potential itemsdue to its metafunctional and contextual nature. Considering this, the author can onlyensure the consistency in this thesis after consulting the supervisor.Therefore, this thesis offers a comparatively new angle of application ofmetadiscouse, with the previous mainly focusing on academic genres. Despite thelimitations, it has some suggestions concerning theories of metadiscourse and therealization of its interpersonal function. That means researchers need to expand thestudy range to include as many genres as possible, both in written and spoken form.Only by enough empirical research, can the theory of metadiscourse be completed.Furthermore, applying the theory to many more genres can help both speakers/writersand audience/readers better understand its interpersonal function and then use it whenspeaking or writing.
