　　CHAPTER 1INTRODUCTION
　　
　　With the rapid development of world economy, cooperation and contacts of differentcountries become more and more important and frequent. As Ma Aiying(2006:4) once said:"With the globalization, the necessity for international contact and cooperation has neverbeen greater than in earlier times and cultural communication of different countries hasbecome more and more frequent." As a result, cross-cultural communication is becominga necessity.Translation, as one of the most important ways of cross-cultural communication,plays an indispensible role in strengthening mutual understanding between nations andpromoting further prosperity of world economy. Since the last century, the activity oftranslating has been thriving.However, when looking back on Chinese translating history, we can see clearly thattranslations from foreign languages into Chinese are far more than those from Chineseinto foreign languages. And the former just offered us considerable knowledge aboutforeign cultures but Chinese culture is still less known by other cultures. The translationsof contemporary Chinese literary works into other languages are even scarce. Thanks toChina's constant reform and opening-up policy, great economical and social developmentshave been achieved in recent years and China is getting stronger and exerting a great dealof influence in the world, as a result of which, the outside world, especially the US, seesChina from totally different perspectives. They wonder why China develops so rapidly andare avid to know about China. Although now the translation into Chinese still outweighstranslation from it, some changes of the situation have been witnessed. Goldblatt'stranslation of Lang Tuteng (《《良图腾》)is a good example of foreign culture's thirst forChinese culture and Chinese culture's strive onto the world stage. This thesis attempts todo some research on Goldblatt's translation of Lang Tuteng from the perspective of HuGengshen's Ecological Theory of Translation Studies: TAS (Translation as Adaptation andSelection). And this chapter mainly presents the significance of the study, the researchmethodology and the structure of the thesis.
　　
　　1.1 The Significance of the Study
　　Since its publication in April 2004, Lang Tuteng, a novel by Jiang Rong, has attractedwide attention in China. It won a good reputation and sold 50,000 copies in the first twoweeks. As one of the most popular novels in China, it also attracted wide attention fromoverseas publishing houses. In 2005, the American Penguin Books purchased its globalEnglish copyright with an advance of $ 100,000 and 10 percent of the purchase value,creating a record for the overseas rights for a contemporary Chinese writer. There's nodoubt that it is a great success in the present context of the large discrepancy in the deficitof the Chinese book copyright trade. Besides, after the publication of Wolf Totem byHoward Goldblatt, a famous translator for the contemporary Chinese literature, JiangRong won the first Man Asian Literary Prize at the Man Hong Kong International LiteraryFestival which aims to promote Asian works of literature. This marks that contemporaryChinese literary works began to enter the western market. As is known, in order to letmore Chinese literature embrace the world smoothly, the way foreigners read Chineseliterature and their preferences should be studied.
