　　Conflict talk happens frequently in people's social life. Because of its complexityand deep influence on society and human beings, scholars study the topic from diverseperspectives, therefore it has the multiplicity of the terminology and different researchquestions. Furthermore, the scholars get different research findings using differentresearch methodologies. Above all, the author will first discuss the definition of conflicttalk; then the results of the study on this topic at home and broad will be presented.The Definition of Conflict TalkActually, there are different terms, concepts and definitions to refer to conflict talk.For example，disagreement (Pomerantz, 1984)，the adversative episode (Eisenberg &Garvey, 1981), the contracting routine (Boggs，1978), oppositional arguments (Schiffrin,1985), verbal discord (Krainer, 1985), quarrel (Antaki, 1994), disputes and disputing(Brenneis，1988，Kotthoff，1993) and conflict talk (Grimshaw, 1990). Conflict talk is aquite general concept. Many speech acts and speech events are included, such asarguing, disputing, quarreling, opposing, squabbling. They share the common features:one party in discourse have conflict with the other party. The conflict is that the party inthe communicative performance opposes to the demeanor of the other or the two partiesConflict talk is widespread in daily life. With the development of sociolinguistics，anthropological linguistics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, philosophy and so on，manyforeign scholars do many researches on conflict talk. In Grimshaw's thesis collection in1990, he collected twelve theses written by conflict talk scholars all over the world. Forexample, William Corsaro and Thomas Rizzo (1990) made a contrastive study on thechildren's conflict talk in American nursery school with that in Italian nursery school.Donna Eder studied about the conflict talk between the serious and playful words ofAmerican high school female students. Allen Grimshaw (1990) had a detailed overviewof conflict talk. He gave his works entitled Conflict Talk: Sociolinguistic Investigationof Arguments in Conversation. C. Goodwin and M.
