Nowadays, moreand more linguists and other experts have begun to study vagueness due to itsincreasing interest.Kit Fine ( 1975:268) describes vagueness as a ” deficiency of meaning", and hebelieves that vagueness is kind of a defect of language, and most of philosophersagree with him.Ullman (1962:118) also points out an important aspect of vagueness:" if onelooks more closely at this vagueness, one soon discovers that the term is itself rathervague and ambiguous. The condition it refers to is not a uniform feature but hasmany aspects and may result from a variety of causes. Some of these are inherent inthe very nature of language, whereas others come into play only in specialcircumstances"Crystal and Davy point out that ” lack of precision is one of the most importantfeatures of the vocabulary of informal conversation" from the angle of appliedlinguistic study.All the studies of vagueness in language are meaningful, but there are still someproblems whether it has advantages or disadvantages. In order to know vaguenessbetter，this thesis involves five chapters to analyse the vagueness in DesperateHouswives.Chapter One is the literature review. In this part, some studies of vagueness byother linguistic researchers are reviewed, and both of the scholars home and abroadare introduced. Besides linguists, some philosophers have studied the vagueness,even much earlier than linguists. Meanwhile, the previous studies on DesperateHousewives are further studied in this chapter.Chapter Two describes theoretical framework. In order to know vaguenessbetter, the definition and feature of vagueness and the classification of vagueness areintroduced respectively. The thesis mainly studies vagueness form the aspect ofpragmatics.Chapter Three is the most important part of this thesis. It presents data analysisand categories of vagueness. In this chapter, the use of vague language in DesperateHousewives is analysed by using Channell's method for identifying vague expressions.A lot of examples from Desperate Housewives are identified and analysed. What'smore, the frequency of each category of vagueness is carefully counted manually.After the analysis, readers can leam that vague expressions contribute a lot to thecommunicative function of people's daily conversations.Chapter Four analyses the vague language of Desperate Housewives frompragmatic functions by using Cooperative principle and Politeness principle .
