Chapter One Introduction

That is why “writing has been a centraltopic in applied linguistics for over half a century but remains an area of livelyintellectual research and debate” (Hyland, 2005: 1). Coherence is an important criterionof one piece of good writing. Coherence theory tells us that discourse markers can makethose coherence relations more explicit within a text and the recovery of such coherencerelations is essential. Thus, this thesis focuses on the discourse markers in the Englishwriting.A great deal of research on discourse markers has been carried out during the pasttwo decades. Although other terms such as “discourse particles”, “connectives”,“pragmatic expressions”, or “pragmatic markers” are preferred by some researchers, theterm “discourse markers” (DMs) is more commonly employed by researchers who workon English discourse, and the author will therefore use the term “discourse markers” inthis paper.


1.1 Background of the Research

Overthe past 40 years, interest in DMs has increased enormously with the development ofdiscourse analysis and pragmatics.Most of the past studies have shown the significant role of DMs in discoursecoherence of verbal communication, but do not pay enough attention toward thecoherent use of DMs in written discourse.Although studies on DMs in writtendiscourse do not form a system,some applied linguists who study writing, such asGrabe and Kaplan (1996), Bublitz (1999) and Lorenz (1999), hold that DMs facilitatecoherence in written discourse. To be more exact, DMs contribute to both local andglobal coherence of written discourse. Meanwhile, coherence is one of the basicrequirements of written discourse or writing. Incoherent writing or written discourse isonly a combination of isolate units or segments without enough or proper cohesivedevices, such as DMs. Since DMs facilitate coherence of writing, they may be adoptedin teaching writing.Some studies have been carried out on DMs in English writing at home, such asChen Xinren (2002), Luo Yi (2003), Mo Junhua (2005) and so on. For example, ChenXinren (2002) tries to find out how Chinese EFL learners made use of DMs in theirwriting, especially in the argumentative writing.
