Chapter One Introduction


本研究探讨中国英语学习者在2005-2006年度全国书面英语考试英语专业(四,六级8)使用的的英语形容词图案(ADJ图案)的使用。英语专业学生从语料库(CEM),第一家专业学习者的英语写作语料库在中国建立自己的表现入选的议论文。的定量研究,并进行了仔细检查一些个别情况下,在分析捜手,后者补充前者。本研究的目的是提高我们理解中国学习者使用ADJ模式,以及效果的评价意义上的变化在ADJ模式的选择。具体来说,它满足以下两个研究问题:1。中国英语学习者如何使用英语ADJ模式笔试在全国英语专业(四,六级8)2。中国英语学习者怎样不同于母语使用ADJ模式评价的含义吗?The present study investigates the use of English Adjective patterns (ADJ patterns)used by the Chinese EFL learners in the 2005-2006 national Written English Test forEnglish Majors (Band 4 and Band 8). The argumentative writings of theirperformance were selected from the Corpus of English Majors (CEM), the firstspecialized learners’ written English corpus built in China. Both a quantitative studyand a close examination of some individual cases were carried out in analyzing thedata at hand, with the latter supplementing the former. The present study is aimed atenhancing our understanding of the Chinese EFL learners’ use of ADJ patterns, andthe effects of evaluative meanings on the variation in the selection of ADJ Patterns.Specifically, it addresses the following two general research questions:1. How do Chinese EFL learners use English ADJ patterns in the nationalWritten Test for English Majors (Band 4 and Band 8)?2. How do Chinese EFL learners differ from the native speakers inevaluative meanings by the use of ADJ patterns?


1.1 Need for the Study
本研究首先出于一些实际原因。但更重要的是,它也负有一定的理论和实用价值。The present study is first motivated by some practical reasons. But moreimportantly, it also bears some theoretical and practical values.


1.1.1 Motivation
The present study is motivated by the fact: 1) that it is important to learn how toperform evaluation in text; 2) that it is difficult to study the evaluative meanings oftext; 3) that there are insufficient studies in the area of ADJ patterns in China; and 4)that it is possible to conduct studies with the advent of computerized corpora and corpus tools.


1.1.1.1 Importance of Evaluation
Evaluation itself is a significant element of our lives: as a device for interpretingthe world and offering this evaluation to others. It pervades human behaviour: whenwe interact with the world around us, we perceive, categorize and evaluate what weencounter. In other words, Evaluation is usually closely associated with the valuesystem, which determines, to a large part, whom we are, how we look at the world,and which path of life we choose to take.Furthermore, evaluation plays an important role in actual discourse due to itsmulti-functionality: it can simultaneously be used to express the writer’s opinion, toconstruct relations between the writer and the reader, and to organize the text(Thompson & Hunston, 2000). It is self-evident that it is difficult, if not impossible,for human beings to speak with a completely “objective” voice, not to imposeevaluation on their utterances, or not to communicate value judgements.Finally, the importance of research on evaluation language also lies in the factthat the socio-linguistic competence of English for the foreign language learnersinvolves learning the social and cultural values of the target language in both speakingand writing.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Introduction
