Conclusion


The major findings will be presented firstly. Humor is a unique form of comicelements in people’s daily life, which plays an important role in social interaction asan effective and appealing art form. Numerous researchers from abroad and at homehave contributed a lot to the appreciation of humor. It is hard to define the word“humor” according many previous well-known researchers since everyone has theirown understanding. In this paper, the author lists most of the famous definitions ofhumor offered by different scholars. In addition, this paper also refers to the threebasic theories on humor: Superiority Theory, Incongruity Theory and Relief Theory,whose advantages and shortcomings are presented specifically from 1.2.1 to 1.2.3.And Raskin's Semantic Script Theory of Humor (SSTH), Attardo and Raskin'sGeneral Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) are included. Conceptual Blending Theory,the fundamental theory of this thesis, is explained in detail and the five forms ofconceptual blending networks are specifically analyzed according to Fauconnier andTurner’s integration network theory, and the application of conceptual blendingtheory to English Humor Appreciation by Artistic College Students is analyzed. Themost important part in this thesis is the design, analysis and discussions on the basisof the two tests and questionnaires. Here are the major findings obtained from the testand questionnaires.In the first place, conceptual blending theory functions a lot in the process ofunderstanding English humor stories, which is seen from the two tests before and afterthis theory is introduced to the participants, because the answers given in the secondtest are much more satisfactory by specifically presenting the reasons why it ishumorous and pointing out the humorous point of each humor story they know.
