Conclusion

In this thesis, the author makes a study on pragmatic failures in Chinese collegestudents' using and understanding euphemistic expressions in cross-culturalcommunication. Causes which lead to pragmatic failures in using and understandingeuphemistic expressions are obtained based on discussions about the results frominvestigations. The purpose of digging out the causes is that some tentative suggestions onavoiding or minimizing pragmatic failures in Chinese college students' using andunderstanding euphemistic expressions in cross-cultural communication can be supplied.First of all，considering the fact that euphemism expands with the lapse of time andour research domain about euphemism，understanding of euphemism reconstructed byreferring to different definitions of scholars is gained as follows: An euphemism is anexpression, a manner, or an implication which is comparatively indirect, mild, polite andfavorable in order to avoid vulgarity of possible loss of face. Considering the fact thateffective cross-cultural communication can only be achieved with participation of thespeaker and the hearer, pragmatic failures is interpreted as those committed by Chinesespeakers of English in using euphemistic expressions and also can refer to those committedby those hearers in understanding English euphemistic expressions in cross-culturalcommunication.
(1) Two questionnaires are designed firstly, which are consistent in content but indifferent form, with Questionnaire 1 in the form of incomplete dialogue (multiple-choices),and Questionnaire 2 in the form of complete dialogue (judgment and correction). There aretwenty questions, indexed from numbers “1” to “20”，which are formed by a combinationof 12 questions on pragmatic failures in using euphemistic expressions and 8 questions onpragmatic failures in understanding euphemistic expressions.
(2) Three investigations are conducted by means of the designed questionnaires. To bespecific，by using the designed two questionnaires, we conduct the first two investigationsto show the pragmatic competence of Chinese college students in using and understanding euphemistic expressions; by using the second questionnaire once again, we conduct thethird investigation to show the rate of acceptance of native English speakers in theperception of the 20 questions.
