1 Introduction

1.1 The Objective of the thesis
In social communication, the use of Euphemism is more and more popular. When we useeuphemisms reasonably, the expression will be more elegant, acceptable and implicative. Whilefor some causes, pragmatic failures of euphemisms often occur in communication. This thesis,starting from the angle of pragmatics, investigates English euphemism. Then some related theoriesare put forward to help learners to use euphemisms effectively. This thesis designs to take afurther research in the causes which lead to pragmatic failures of English euphemism and thestrategies which could cut down pragmatic failures. Through the analysis of causes, some effectivestrategies are studied to help people use English euphemism successfully.For English learners, it is very important to know the related knowledge of Englisheuphemism and use English euphemism effectively in communication. So in the socialcommunication, learners should use euphemisms selectively to avoid pragmatic failures. Thus, agood foundation can be laid for cross-cultural communication.

1.2 The Significance of the Thesis
Euphemism, as a common language phenomenon, exists in nearly every language. It is animportant communicative means that helps to establish a harmonious interpersonal relationship.There are many researches about English euphemisms from the angle of linguistics,sociolinguistics and pragmatics. The achievements are also conspicuous in this topic. However,there are still many aspects of English euphemisms need be widened and deepened.This thesis aims at studying the pragmatic failures of euphemism from the angle ofpragmatics. Though many scholars have gained prominent achievements in this field, they mainlyresearched the pragmatic functions and classifications of euphemism. A few of them gave theirinterests in pragmatic failures of euphemism. Therefore, the research in this field has fundamentalimportance.The term “pragmatic failure” was firstly put forward by Jenny Thomas to refer to “theinability to understand what is meant by what is said”[1]. This thesis systematically analyzes thecauses which lead to pragmatic failures of English euphemism and proposes the strategies whichavoid pragmatic failures. In modern society, people would like to use English euphemism tocommunicate. With the increasing development of globalization, cross-cultural communication isbecoming more and more popular. So the reasonable use of English euphemisms is also becomingmore and more important. However, because of the lack of cultural knowledge, the inappropriateuse of taboo words and some other reasons, the phenomenon of pragmatic failures may be seeneverywhere.

2 Literature Review

2.1 Studies of English Euphemism
As the use of euphemism becomes more and more popular, it plays an important role in ourdaily life. Hugh Rawson stated “euphemisms are embedded so deeply in our language that few ofus, even those who pride themselves on being plain-spoken, ever get through a day without usingthem. Thus, euphemisms are society’s basic lingua franca. As such, they are outward and visiblesigns of our inward anxieties, conflicts, fears and shames. They are like radioactive isotopes. Bytracing them, it is possible to see what is (and has been) going on in our language, our minds andour culture”[2, 3].
