Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background
With the development of language teaching, the research emphasis of foreign language teaching and learning had been shifted from teaching behaviors to learning behaviors, namely, from "how to teach" to "how to learn". Since then, though many new teaching approaches centered on learners have been advocated, traditional language teaching still plays a dominant role in today's English class. A lot of limitations of college English teaching, such as large-size class, pressure of passing CET4/CET6 for non-English major students, students, inadequate approaches to learning, and out-dated teaching materials in China not only bring about unavoidable problems, but also big challenges. For instance, the problem of "dumb-English" is rather common. Some students can write very good passages, but can not communicate with others well. And many of them have encountered such an experience: they fail to express and convey their intended meaning when communicating in the target language. Then it comes the challenge that cultivating students communication competence should be set as the main goal in English teaching.

As it's known, after Sclinkcr (1972) first put forward the concept of communicationstrategies in the thesis "Intcrlanguagc" in 1972, people realize that language learning links withthe mental process of thinking and problem solving. In this regard, CSs study becomes a bigconcern and interest among researchers, arousing them to think about and review such kind ofquestions: How do foreign language learners communicate effectively in learning process? Howdo foreign language learners cope with the difficulties when communicating with native speakers?Or what kinds of communication strategics are used by foreign language learners? With theproposal of those issues, considerable studies have been done about communication strategies inthe following three decades, and most of those researches have mainly focused on the definition,typology, teachability of CSs and the function of communication strategies. What's more, inrecent decade, the study of communication strategies has advanced a lot. Much more empiricalstudies have been done on communication strategies. Particularly in China, the study ofcommunication strategies has drawn more and more attention while developing students'communicative competence as the main goal in English teaching and learning. Yet the attentionon CSs empirical study is still not highlighted enough. In order to have a deeper understanding ofCSs, it is necessary to carry out much further researches.

1.2 Purpose of the Present Study
