n task were bothself-designed, although the author had only very limited knowledge about music.Thus, the validity and reliability of the pitch perception tests, pitch production task,and foreign language imitation task remain to be verified, especially since they wereall combined in one study. Many improvements may be done with respect to thematerials used in the current study. For example, future studies could explore whetherfive-note sequences or notes consisting of more fine-grained pitch contrasts are moreeffective in assessing pitch production ability. Besides, there is still room forimprovement in the combination of phonemes, tonal peaks, and stressed syllablesinvolved in the linguistic stimuli. Moreover, as we have found that timing errorssometimes also led to poor imitations, adding rhythm tests to future work seems notonly desirable, but necessary.Second, the present study gathered data from 12 participants. A larger number ofparticipants would of course be desirable, but due to limited time resources, thenumber of participants was still relatively small. The fact that only a small number ofparticipants was involved may have caused me to overlook possible variables such astheir personalities, dialects, and intelligence.Third, because of the lack of batch processing tools for abstracting andcomparing fundamental frequency information, manually processing the data wasextremely time consuming, which forced me to drop the analyses of trial 2s and 3s.This omission may have led to the surprising results reported in Section 4.3.4.Researchers may work out a more efficient way to abstract and compare fundamentalfrequency data, or come up with a better solution to find the balance betweeneconomy and precision in sampling.Finally, the current study was only based on empirical data to demonstrate thatthere might exist a close relationship between musical pitch processing abilities andlinguistic intonation imitation, without excluding the possibility that musical pitchprocessing and linguistic intonation processing both have their roots indomain-general cognitive abilities, such as the use of memory or recursion(Jackendoff, 2009). Therefore, caution is still needed when we discuss the reasons forour findings in the current, ongoing debate.
