摘要:Generally speaking, a language has both spoken and written forms,its spokenform is often the first resort in terms of its communicative fiinction. A good commandof pronunciation will enable the speaker to express himself effectively.
Chapter 4 Analysis and Discussion
4.1 Contrast between phonetics of English and Wuxi Dialect
The accent that we concentrate on and use as our modal is the one that is mostoften recommended for foreign learners studying British English, It has for a longtime been identified by the name Received Pronunciation (usually abbreviate to itsinitials, RP), but this name is old-fashioned and misleading. Since it is most familiaras the accent used by most announcers and newsreaders on BBC and Britishindependent television broadcasting channels, a preferable mane is BBCpronunciation. This should not be taken to mean that the BBC itself imposes an“official,,accent - individual broadcasters all have their own personal characteristics,and an increasing number of broadcasters with Scottish,Welsh and Irish accents areemployed. However, the accent is typical of broadcasters with an English accent, andthere is a useful degree of consistency in the broadcast speech of these speakers.Received Pronunciation (RP) is the standard accent of Standard English inEngland, with a relationship to regional accents similar to the relationship in otherEuropean languages between their standard varieties and their regional forms. RP isdefined in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary as "the standard accent of Englishas spoken in the south of England", although it can be heard from native speakers throughout England and Wales.

After discussing the topic for the chapters above so far, it is clear that learningEnglish pronunciation is the foundation of English study. English learners should paymore attention to their English pronunciation and focus on the problem based on thenegative transfer from Wuxi dialect to English with more clear direction. When thenegative transfer is found,the teachers should be sensible enough to point out themistake and correct them. Then the learning of oral English will be more efficient andstudents can easily master tiae sounds in English. For the questions raised before, now the answers are given from the analysis andresult of the survey and experiment:Wuxi dialect has different aspects of negative transfer on EFL learners'English pronunciation in at least three ways: phoneme vacancy, imperfectcorrespondence and a lack of proper intonation.
