本文是对《中国日报》和《纽约时报》关于“第一阶段”贸易协议的经济新闻报道的对比研究。本文以费尔克洛夫的三维模型框架为理论基础，以韩礼德的系统功能语法为分析工具，对两份官方报纸的经济新闻报道进行了批判性分析，旨在挖掘隐藏在经济新闻报道中的隐性意识形态。在做出一些发现之前，有必要提及前面的研究问题，如第一章所述。

Chapter 1Introduction

1.1 Research Background of the Research

As is known to all, language use is one of the most important and indispensableparts in modern society, for the reason people around the world use different languagesto express their thoughts and views, which is not usually realized. One of the massMedia, newspapers, are becoming a necessary part in people’s daily life. Today, with therapid development of society and technology, people tend to rely on this kind of massmedia to acquire the latest information. In order to get the authentic and newestinformation, news report is an effective way to understand what is happening in theworld.

Since the late 1970s, Critical Discourse Analysis (abbreviated as CDA below), as awell-established field in the social sciences, aims to disclose the relations amonglanguage, ideology and power through its language from different aspects. Newsdiscourse is one of main analysis subjects of critical discourse analysis. People canknow opinions implied by the author and understand the real intention of the eventsdescribed in the discourse. Thus, Critical Discourse Analysis can provide someguidance for the analysis of news discourse. “Media discourse is the main source ofpeople’s knowledge, attitudes and ideologies, both of elites as well as of ordinarycitizens.” (Van Dijk, 1993, p. 36). In fact, people use language to express their ideas,standpoints without realizing it. Even the news reports are generally accepted asobjective and unbiased, it is also the reason that critical analysts consider it as a popularresearch object in this field. Fowler (1991, p. 223) hold that “News reflect therelationship between media and the country’s different organizations. News reports canalso affect people’s attitude to social events. That’s why more and more critical linguistspay much attention to the news reports and most of them aim to expose power andideology behind the news discourses.”

1.2 Significance of the Research

This present study is of great theoretical and practical significance. First of all, thetheoretical significance lies in the scope of the research objects of CDA. It is acontribution to as well as an application of CDA. Through using the CDA on economicdiscourses, this research extends the applying range of the critical analysis and furtherproves that Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model framework and Halliday’s SystemicFunctional Grammar are feasible and can be integrated in critical discourse analysis.The second is the practice value. This thesis proves that this kind of economic newsreports are not as objective as they claim to be. They are influenced by ideology or political groups. Practically, the research is also helpful for drawing great attention tothe critical language awareness in news reading and in language teaching and learningactivities. It is well-known to all that both English teaching and learning in China aremerely laying emphasis on the meanings of words, sentence structures and theinformation in given discourses.
