摘要:This study is an experimental research inquiring into the acquisition of Englishdentals and alveo-palatals by the children whose mother tongue is Putonghua from 5 to 7. Itaims to reflect the reality of English dentals and alveo-palatals acquisition by the childrenwhose mother tongue is Putonghua, find out and summarize the pronunciation mistakes, inaddition, provide some available methods to help the children to avoid negative transfer ofmother tongue.

2 Literature Review


2.1 Theoretical Foundation
The first language makes some positive or negative influences by which the secondlanguage acquisition is strongly interfered; these are believed by linguists. According to Odlin(1989: 27), transfer is the influence resulting from similarities and differences between thetarget language and any other language that has been previously (and perhaps imperfectly)acquired. During the process of acquisition, pronunciation errors can be seen frequently. Here,“transfer” describes the carryover of previous performance or knowledge to the subsequentlearning (Brown, 2001).Odlin (2001: 89) points out that “the interference of L1 can be positive and negative,interference implies no more than negative transfer, which is contrast to the positive transfer. ”If the second language and the first language have some similarities, positive transfer willoccur and make the acquisition easier; inversely, negative transfer occurs and causes errorsbecause of the differences of two languages in the process of acquiring the second language.Ellis (1985:19) pointed out that the clearest support for Language Transfer Theory “comesfrom ‘foreign’ accents in the L2 ”.

2.2 Previous Studies on L2 Speech Sound Acquisition
In recent years, more and more people begin to realize the importance ofpronunciation of foreign language in the process of teaching and learning. Till now, numerousresearches of the second language speech sound acquisition have been implemented by theinternal and external scholars. Among them, the researches of English speech soundacquisition are an important part of it. It is well known that English and Chinese are twodifferent kinds of languages. They belong to the different language families. As a result, thedifferences of them will lead to the influence of English speech sound acquisition. It is well known that most of the current speech sound researches about the secondlanguage acquisition concern the phonological transfer studies, segmental studies; acquisitionmodels, teaching and learning process, relationship between perception and production, andnon-linguistic considerations (Leather, 1999; Major, 1998).
