personal meaning in general, which could be divided into twointer-related stages: before “interpersonal meaning” stage and “interpersonal meaning” stage.Among all of the studies on interpersonal meaning, systemic-functional approach is aprominent one and is widely applied both abroad and at home. As a result, in the following,typical cases of the application of the systemic-functional grammar to interpersonal meaningstudy are presented. Based on the former studies, the author chooses three realization meansof interpersonal meaning under systemic-functional grammar framework and states them indetails, which are also the points of penetration of this study. Although the interpersonal meaning of the discourse attracts the interest of linguists justin the recent ten years, many scholars in different fields have related their studies on it nearlya hundred year ago. Generally speaking, studies on interpersonal meaning could be dividedinto two inter-related stages: before “interpersonal meaning” stage and “interpersonalmeaning” stage. In the following, the writer will present the influential and representativescholars’ researches and achievements in each period.

2.2 Studies on the Interpersonal Meaning of Speeches
Public speech plays an important role in our social lives. The interpersonal purpose ofspeech is to convey information, express feelings and build social relationship. A successfulspeech can move and convince the audience, and make the audience achieve resonance so asto take action according to the speaker’s wishes. As a result, many scholars paid attention tothe interpersonal meaning of speeches and made studies on it. Their studies not only give us acomprehensive view of the realization means of different types of speeches but also makecontribution to the research methods of the study of speeches’ interpersonal meaning.For example, based on the analysis of the grammatical structures of the Englishwar-declaration speeches, Chen Yanyan (2006) made a comparative study between the war-declaration speeches and non-war declaration speeches and revealed how and in what waysthe speakers manage to achieve their interpersonal purposes in war –declaration speeches.Another scholar, Mengjiao (2009) made a study on the English impromptu speeches ofChinese college students from the perspective of modality system. It was found that thespeakers prefer to use the finite modal verbs and interpersonal metaphor.Chen Ming (2010) did a study on the mood, modality and tense system of theinterpersonal functions of the London’s speeches bidding for the 2012 Olympic Games. Hisstudy presented us in what ways the speakers use suitable language devices to realize theirinterpersonal purposes effectively and successfully.
