Chapter One Introduction

1.1Research Background
They are essential in the publicfestivals or important celebrations, where the speakers should not only consider the commonrequest of public speaking, but also should make allowance for the special time and occasionto express their attitude and feelings appropriately. As an important social skill, making agood celebrating speech or memorial speech could help us form and adjust socialinterpersonal relationships. In other words, how to realize the interpersonal function of thecelebrating speech and the memorial speech by words appropriately is important to people,especially to those who always attend the festivals and ceremonies.Although lots of scholars have devoted themselves into the study of the interpersonalmeanings of various types of speeches, celebrating speech and memorial speech, which are ofgreat importance in people’s social life, have not been covered, not to mention comparing therealization means of interpersonal meaning of the two etiquette speeches in details.Halliday’s systemic functional grammar provides us a scientific and integratedtheoretical basis for analyzing the discourses’ interpersonal meanings. It claims that languagehas three mater-functions, i.e. ideational function, textural function and interpersonal function,among which interpersonal function could be analyzed from the mood system, modalitysystem and personal pronoun system.Under this research background, the writer is going to conduct a contrastive study of theinterpersonal meaning in the discourses of English celebrating speech and memorial speechfrom the perspective of mood system, modality system and personal pronoun sytem.

1.2Purpose and Significance of the Present Study
Through a comparative analysis of the interpersonal meaning in the discourses ofEnglish celebrating speech and English memorial speech within the framework of Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, the writer of this study expects to find out the frequency ofoccurrences on mood, modality, and personal pronoun of English celebrating speech andEnglish memorial speech. It is also wanted to discover the similarities and differences in thefrequency of occurrences on mood, modality, and personal pronoun of English celebratingspeech and English memorial speech.This study will examine once again the feasibility of using systemic functional approachin discourse analysis and contribute somewhat to the development of theoretical studies ofinterpersonal function in the future. What’s more, the present study aims to reveal therealization means of interpersonal meaning of celebrating speech and memorial speech, whichfills in the gaps in this field. Besides that, this research could help the readers to distinguishthe linguistic resources to realize the interpersonal meaning in celebrating speech andmemorial speech and their different interpersonal functions. Last but not least, it is expectedthat the study results will do a favor for speech lovers to improve their lecturing skills.
