摘要:Through a comparative analysis of the interpersonal meaning in the discourses ofEnglish celebrating speech and English memorial speech within the framework of Halliday’ssystemic functional grammar, the writer of this study expects to find out the frequency ofoccurrences on mood, modality, and personal pronoun of English celebrating speech andEnglish memorial speech.
Chapter Five Results Analysis and Discussion
5.1 Differences and Similarities of the Frequency of Occurrence of the Mood System
After analysis, the writer thinks that one of the reasons for this similarity is that bothEnglish celebrating speeches and memorial speeches should regard conveying information astheir primary and essential function. Sun Lixiang (2004) points that delivering a lecture is akind of “speaking centered” promotion campaign and “performing assisted” artistic activity.Speaking and conveying information is the deciding factor and plays a leading role indelivering a speech successfully. Although some non-verbal language using skills, such asbody language, arrangement of the passage, words choosing and so on, are very important forthe lecturers to deliver a vivid and fascinating speech, the content of the speech, which isregarded as the spirit of the speech, is actual the key to create the atmosphere and to make theimpact on the audiences. As a result, “performing”, which could be said as the appearanceof a speech, should be pursued on the basis of the “information”, i.e. the content of a speech;otherwise, the lecture will lose its basic meaning of existence.

Conclusion
The first investigation of the interpersonal meaning in the two types of speeches comesto the mood system. It is found that among the three mood types, i.e. declarative, interrogativeand imperative, declarative sentences, which function to deliver information, dominate thetwo types of speeches. As to the differences, the English celebrating speeches apply moreimperative sentences in the form of beginning with “let’s”, which makes the lecture inspiringand motivating and, at the same time, bridges the distance between the speaker and theaudiences and increases the approbation feeling of the audiences. On the contrary, the Englishmemorial speeches employ more interrogative sentences, especially the wh-questions, whichguide the audiences to think and recognize the virtue and spirit of the departed person. The second analysis is the modality system. The three main modal verbal operators“can”, “will”, and “must” are analyzed in details. It is disclosed that both the Englishcelebrating speeches and the English memorial speeches apply the modal verb “will” as themajor modality form, which follows by “can” and “must”. However, although the two typesof speeches have the same tendency in the distribution of the three main modality verbs, thereexist nuances. Firstly, the English celebrating speeches apply less “will” and more “must”than those in the English memorial speeches. Secondly, the modal verb “can” mostly means“ability” in the celebrating speeches and mostly means “probability” in the memorialspeeches.
