摘要:Through quantitative and qualitative research methods, the present study isintended to investigate English-major postgraduates' use of oral communicationstrategies in China. The study first attempts to investigate students' perception of theeffectiveness and self-use of CSs.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 The Theoretical Patterns of Communicative Competence
Hymes names the language ability of the proper use in specific social context as"communicative competence", which marks the establishment of the theory ofcommunicative competence. Hymens' theory of communicative competence is putforward to rectify Chomsky's definition of competence. According to Hymes, one'sability to communicate refers to make speaking and understanding the meaningfulbehavior in social life, by being able to make the proper decision on what to say,how tosay, when to say and under what circumstances to say. His concept includes not only theknowledge of language, but also the ability to use language appropriately in particularcontexts.Hymens' theory is mainly restricted to the theoretical thoughts on sociolinguistics,while later two Canadian scholars, Canale & Swain, enrich and develop the theory ofcommunicative competence in the specific description of its contents, which providesan important theoretical basis and practical reference. In accordance with the statementsput by Canale & Swain (1980) and Canale (1983),communicative competence coversfour key aspects, that is, grammatical competence, social language skills,discoursecompetence and strategic competence, as shown in Figure 1.1, To be specific,thestrategic competence is defined as the ability to use verbal and nonverbalcommunication strategies, especially as to improve the communication effects or toovercome the communication breakdowns for interlocutor's lack or tdeficiency of otherthree competences.

2.2 Interlanguage and Strategic Competence
Selinker first proposed the concept of “interlanguage” in one of his publishedpaper entitled Interlanguage in 1972,which marked the establishment of interlanguagetheory. Interlanguage refers to second language learners' distinct language system in theprocess of second language learning, which is different from their target language andnative language, but meanwhile, it covers several features both from target language andnative language. The interlanguage theory points out that the process of foreignlanguage learning is the process of approaching to the target language from nativelanguage. The characteristics of interlanguage can be summarized as the following four points:-the learners' language is an independent dynamic system;_ it develops towards the target language;-there are different stages and possibilities of development in the process;-it could be easily affected, even with the tendencies of fossilization and regression.Selinker also brings forward five possible sources of the above distinctivefeatures of interlanguage from psycho linguistics angle:
