2. An Overview of the Factors Affecting SL Listening Comprehension
Listening is not only an important skill in SL Communication, but also a basic ability in the process ofSLA. It can influence the other SL skills (speaking, reading and writing), and then influence theSLA. In view of the listening as central to the Second Language, it is necessary for us to deepen our understanding.
So we first should understand what SL listening comprehension is and what factors affect second language listening comprehension. This chapter introduces the theory of SL listening comprehension and non-learner factors and learner factors.
2.1. The Definition of Listening Comprehension
Listening comprehension from the theory is viewed as an active process in which individuals focus on selected aspects of aural input, construct meaning from passages, and relate what they hear to existing knowledge.
Anderson[2] divided the listening comprehension process into three stages: the perceptual, parsing, and utilization. On the first stage, listeners usually focus on the oral text and preserve the sound in memory. In the next stage, listeners constructed meaningful mental representations by using words and message. On the last stage, listeners try to link the incoming message to their existing knowledge.
Coakley and Wolin[3] think listening comprehension have five stages. First, learners were motivated to listen to aural input. Second, learners get the messages from the speakers. Third, the information must be attended to short-term memory system. During the stage, learners’ attention also affected by their background knowledge and former experience. Fourth, leaners fitted and attended the information that they received into the appropriate linguistic categories that were stored in the bran. In the final stage, learners responded to the message in the long time memory, then immediate feedback communicated to speakers.
SL listening comprehension is an important part ofSLAand SL teaching. As the second language acquisition theory further development, people come to understand the essence of SL listening comprehension. There are three main methods to the theory of SL listening comprehension: environmentalist approach, innatist approach and interactionlist approach.
