Chapter 5. Summary


In this dissertation, the influences of different English teaching methods on thestudents in senior high schools and universities are analyzed by means of someexperiments made in the sample schools. The results of the experiments shows thatthere are still some problems with the English teaching in senior high schools anduniversities and the most noticeable one is the students in senior high schools couldachieve a higher score in the exams but their performance is less satisfying after theywere enrolled in universities. Besides, students often complain that the Englishbecame much more difficult than what they have learned in senior high schools.Besides, they are less motivated to learn English since it seems to account for less partin their exams in universities and they have to spend more time on the subjectsrelevant to their majors. In the experiments, 10 classes are chose from key senior highschools and famous universities (5 of them are from senior high schools and theothers are from universities) and the English teachers of those classes are required toemploy one single teaching method only so as to show the influence of such methodon the English proficiency of the students. The teaching methods that the teacherscould choose from include grammar-translation method, direct method, readingmethod, situational method and emotional method. According to the results of theexperiments, the influence of the grammar-translation method is limited while theother four methods are more effective. The experiments also provide importantenlightenment on the teaching methods to improve the English proficiency of studentsin senior high schools and universities, as well as on coordinating the Englishteaching in senior high schools and universities, which is introduced in the fourthchapter.

Even though the influence of different teaching methods on the students in seniorhigh schools and universities has been analyzed by means of experiments adinterviews, there are still large numbers of students which are not taken intoconsideration. Therefore, it is still necessary to make more researches about theEnglish teaching methods in senior high schools and universities.
