des  the  four  conditions for  the  production  of  verbal  humor,  Mark  Twain’s  humorous  novels  are  adopted.  It will  analyze  Mark  Twain’s  verbal  humor  from  the  following  aspects:  simultaneous adaptation  to  the  linguistic  choice-making,  simultaneous  adaptation  to  the  mental world, simultaneous adaptation to the physical world, simultaneous adaptation to the social  world.  Firstly,  it  comes  to  the  simultaneous  adaptation  to  the  linguistic choice-making.

4.1 Simultaneous Adaptation to the Linguistic Choice-making 

As  Verschueren  (1999)  points,  using  language  is  the  process  of  continuous making of linguistic choices. In order to create the humor effect, the writers tend to make  linguistic  choices  cautiously.  When  the  linguistic  expression  encounters  the conventional expression ingrained in our mind, the contrast appears and the humor is produced.  In  such  condition,  the  readers  should  make  proper  adaptation  to  the linguistic choice-making to understand humor production.

Conclusion

As a complicated language phenomenon, verbal humor always gets most of the scholar’s  attention.  There  have  been  abundant  researches  of  verbal  humor  from  the theories  of  pragmatics,  for  instance,  the  cooperative  principle,  the  relevance  theory, and presupposition theory. This  thesis  attempts  to  discuss  the  verbal  humor  from  some  of  Mark  Twain’s works by adopting an integrative perspective formed through integrating mental space theory  and  adaptation  theory.  It  first  proves  that  possibility  of  combining  the  two theories  from  the  theoretical  background,  and  then  it  attests  that  the  integrative approach is practically viable and preferable. Both the theoretical combination and the practical  preference  are  then  testified  against  Mark  Twain’s  verbal  humor  with relation  to  both  its  production  and  its  interpretation.  Through  the  application  of  the integrative perspective to the two literary works of Mark Twain.
