Deignan  (1999)  introduces  a  corpus-based  approach  to  the  identification  of metaphorical expressions in English and believes that the corpus-based study can “give information about the frequency and usage of linguistic metaphors which is otherwise difficult  to  access”  (Deignan,  1999a:  177).

The  general  conceptual  metaphor  distribution  among  different  media  can  be indicated by the tables below. PHYSICAL CONFLICT METAPHOR ranks in the first place in each media and accounts for 47.8%, 62% and 46.3% respectively in The New York Times, The Times and China Daily. JOURNEY METAPHOR comes as the second popular  conceptual  metaphor  while  MENTAL  HEALTH  METAPHOR  the  third. PHYSICAL  HEALTH  METAPHOR  occupies  the  least  proportion  in  the  corpus respectively. However, each media has its preference when using conceptual metaphors in  specific  discourse.  Similarities  are  found  in  the  MENTAL  HEALTH  METAPHOR and  PHYSICAL  HEALTH  METAPHOR  while  differences  are  in  PHYSICAL CONFLICT  METAPHOR  and  JOURNEY  METAPHOR.  We  will  illustrate  it  in  the following parts.
