l Author, Author. As the second novel on James published in 2004, the book surprised the reviewers as a dramatic change from the author’s other novels. Contrasting to the light and comic style of his former works, this book’s slow pace and mused irony shocked frequent readers of Lodge; moreover its resemblance to biography confused some previous reviewers.
2.1 The Study of Author,Author Abroad
The early reviewers had disputes on this book, especially its genre and the characterization of Henry James. Gradually, study on both the topics became more liberal and text-based. Instead of reading the book according to rigid orthodox of genre, researchers became tolerate to the hybrid nature of the work’s genre. . The difficulty of classifying this book provoked harsh criticism ever since its publication. Most of the reviewers discerned the book’s reliance on historical and biographical facts. Some accepted these confusing elements as Lodge’s venture (Peters 2004; Thawite 2004). Some reviewers read the book’s affinity to biography as its defect. The novelistic imagination is confined by the need to provide biographical facts (Hollinghurst 2004; Nial 2004). American critic James Woods is annoyed by the hybrid nature of biography, novel and historical novel in the book, arguing that Lodge’s novel is “contaminated in this way by its fusion of genres” (23). His review is considered by Cushing Strout as “as hostile as possible”, “overwhelmingly negative” (xxxvi). Cushing Strout, in his detailed and penetrating review, points out that Lodge’s work does not fit into the tradition of historical novel represented by Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Penn Warren, which “put fictional characters in the foreground rather than historical persons, so that the novelist does not trespass too much on the biographer’s ground or pretend to know from the inside what it would be like to inhabit the historical hero’s consciousness” (xxxiv). Strout thinks in the work of Author, Author, there is a constant struggle between the novelist and biographer “for territory” (xxxiv).
