5. Data Analysis of Engagement Resources

5.1 Statistical Results

The distributions and frequencies of the engagement resources of the corpus arecalculated by the linguistic software. As the branches of Engagement System are complex,this thesis only provides the statistical result, the following interpretation will present theengagement resources in detail.In the table, the percentage of all the features adds to 100%. The table presents thepercentage of each engagement resource. The total number of engagement resources is 3218.The expansion resources are obviously more than the contraction resources. In dialogiccontraction, disclaim accounts for 29.02% in the whole system, the number is 934, while thenumber of proclaim accounts for 7.86%, the number is 253. In disclaim, the numbers ofdeny and counter are 627 and 307 respectively, accounting for 19.48% and 9.54% in thewhole Engagement System of this book. In the subsystem of proclaim, the number of concur,pronounce and endorse are 181, 35 and 37, accounting for 5.62%, 1.09% and 1.15%respectively. Among the expansion resources, the number of entertain is 1048 and accountsfor 32.57% in the whole system, which is the biggest part in the statistical result. The numberand percentage of attribute are 983 and 30.55%, while in the subsystem of attribute, thenumber of acknowledge resources is 691, accounting for 21.47% of the total. The number ofdistance resources is rarely low, the number is 292 and it only accounts for 9.07% in thewhole Engagement System.

Conclusion

This chapter summarizes the major findings of the thesis, elaborates the implicationsfor the future studies, and gives the limitations and suggestions for future studies. In order tostudy the effect of engagement resources on the discourse, the thesis calculates all theengagement resources in the biography. According to the combination of quantitative andqualitative research methods, the research questions have been answered.
