2 Literature Review

Public speech, as a special kind of language expression, has particular languagefeatures in achieving certain communicative purpose. Public speech is the art ofhaving something to say, and saying it well (Sevitch, 2005). Osborn(1982)emphasized the acoustic features of public speech. Wilson (1994), Lucas (2004) andJaffe (2004) also proposed the definition about public speech in their own ways.Roughly speaking, public speech is an activity of making speeches in front of manypeople.Public speech can be classified into various types by taking different standards,just like reading speech, reciting speech, outline-style speech and impromptu speechbased on speech content (Zhang Jiatai, 1999). It also includes recreational speech,academic speech, persuasive speech and inspirational speech from the perspective ofcommunicative purpose (Verderber, 1997). Inspirational speech, as one kind of publicspeech, has its own stylistic characters. The following part will introduce itcomprehensively. Besides, emotion expression is an indispensable part in inspirationalspeech and accent is a vital factor in expressing emotion. So, a brief review aboutemotion and accent will also be mentioned.

2.1 Inspirational speech
In America, inspirational speech is an effective way to convey spirit and arouseemotional resonance in inspiring the college students. A systematic introduction aboutit is presented.English inspirational speech, as its name implies, refers to a kind of publicspeech to encourage the audience to break through difficulties on their way to successbravely. Public speech is a special kind of communication, being treated as atime-honored activity in the Western culture. The definition about inspirational speechhasn’t reached a consensus; the most representative definition is made by Verderber.Verderber (1997) defines inspirational speech as a kind of persuasive speech, whichcan attract the audiences’ attention and then persuade them to accept the speaker’sviews and suggestions through developing emotional resonance, achieving thepurpose of encouraging audiences to take proper actions. Inspirational speech is akind of public speech to inspire the audience to struggle or deal with difficulties in lifepositively and bravely ( Li Yanfen, 2014).

2.2 Previous studies on inspirational speech
Since a lot of researches have been conducted on inspirational speech fromvarious aspects, it is necessary to summarize these former findings for further study.The former studies can be summarized as follows.The study on the public speech has a long history, which can date from theancient Greece and Roman times. The famous ancient public speakers like Socrates,Plato, Aristotle, Cicero mainly focused on teaching learners about the speech logic,techniques and argument forms. Now the speech is developing, and different kinds ofpublic speeches have emerged, among which inspirational speech has been paid muchattention.Jo Roberts(1987) found that the graduates prefer a practical and usefulinspirational speech rather than a long grandiose congratulations through analyzingthe contents of commencement speech.
