Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Researches on Foregrounding Theory
In this chapter, there will be a discussion of the development of the foregrounding theory in abroad at first, which are some classic ideas brought out by the representative figures in western countries. Then the researches about this theory at home will be discussed. After having a systematic review of the foregrounding theory, specific researches about Ann Beattie and her The New Yorker Stories both in abroad and at home will be also discussed and reviewed. The following passage lists the main stages of foregrounding theory of western countries in chronological order. It is a systematic review about the development of the theory. As we mentioned before that foregrounding has its source in art painting. It is Aristotle who first classifies it as a language research category. He maintained the importance of making literary works distinctive from other works and that foregrounding can help to achieve this aim. After a few years, a group named Russian Formalists came into being. They are so eminent in the developing
history of linguistics, and it’s hard for this
thesis not to mention about them.
