nd  collection  of  short  stories  Secrets  and  Surprises  (1978)  mainly focuses  on  the  insufficient  of  human  relationships.  In  her  second  novel  Falling  in Place (1980), Beattie exerts an expanded vision not only in the change of the setting to the suburbia, but also the range of the characters, which has extended from children to  middle-aged.  The  relationships  between  woman  and  man,  children  and  adults  are continually  to  be  important  in  her  third  volume  The  Burning  House  (1982)  and  the novel  Love  Always  (1985),  both  of  which  show  Beattie’s  diversity  and  talent  as  a writer. The children-adults relationship is a mirror of the society, and the irony of the shallowness of the contemporary society. Beattie’s another novel Picturing Will (1989) conveys the same theme and it shakes the reader’s image of good mothers and fathers. Although the critic voices are mixed, the publication of Where You’ll Find Me (1986) and  What  was  Mine  (1991)  help  Beattie  shake  off  the  title  of  spokesperson  for  the 1960s  generation.

Chapter Five Over-regularity in The New Yorker Stories 

As  is  already  observed  in  the  preceding  passage,  there  are  unique  deviant features in The New Yorker Stories at the lexical level, the graphological level and the semantic  level.  Other  foregrounded  features  also  exist  in  this  novel.  In  this  part,  this thesis  will  deal  with  the  other  type  of  foregrounding,  which  is  over-regularity.  Compared with deviation, less classifications and examples can be found in this novel. Therefore,  we  chiefly  make  an  analysis  of  the  over-regularity  at the  syntactical  level and the semantic level.
