bsp;she accuses Austen of her unawareness of passion (Zhu Hong, 1985:5). Likewise, it can be seen that Wordsworth and Mrs. Browning use derogatory terms to comment on Austen (Zhu Hong, 1985:5). In view of these objections, David Cecil uses a few words to refute Austen’s opponents in 1935. He states that discriminating critic appreciates Austen’s works and most educated readers who have read her novels all feel euphoric. In his opinion, there are many people who don’t like Austen’s works as they don’t like sunshine and selfless spirit (Zhu Hong, 1985:5). The negative image of the early reviews of the novel mainly focuses on the heroine, which seems to support Austen’s conclusion that Emma is a heroine that nobody likes except herself (Zhu Hong, 1985:3). However, some insightful critics find the “greatness” of Emma. Arnold, the British literary critic, claims that Emma is a vivid picture of the past social life, and it is still valuable to the society that has changed since when we are reading this novel, we see both the past and the present (Zhu Hong, 1985:251-252). Contemporary feminist scholar Claudia Johnson thinks that Emma has become an independent school in Austen’s novels and discusses woman’s right from a positive angle(Johnson, 1988:126).
