Chapter 4 The development of Pi’s ethical view 

Life  of  Pi  is  the  development  of  Pi‘s  ethical  consciousness  from  ambiguous understanding  of  the  relationship  between  human  and  animals  to  firm  belief  in  a harmonious relationship between human and nature. Pi experiences happy life in the zoo and  religious  baptism  in  his  early  time,  which  helps  his  Human  Factor  to  suppress  the Animal  Factor.  Also,  he  superficially  believes human  should protect animals and nature, which  is  the  elementary  attitude  of  environmental  ethics.  The  shipwreck  on  the  Pacific Ocean changes Pi‘s life, and owing to the extreme living condition, he has to kill marine creatures,  and  even  eats  his  mother ‘s  body;  the  Animal  Factor  appears.  His  behavior violates  ethical and environmental ethical  morality, but  he knows his action  is  wrong. It is  the  extreme  living  condition  that  helps  him  to  clarify  his  ethical  principle.  So  after being  rescued,  his  Animal  Factor  is  suppressed  again,  and  the  thought  of  protecting nature is rooted in his mind deeply. From then on, his ethical view is established. 

4.1 Superficial understanding of ethical morality 
According  to  Nie  Zhenzhao,  there  are  Human  Factor  and  Animal  Factor  in  human nature,  and  is  called  ―Sphinx  Factor‖.  The  most  important  concept  in  ethical  literary criticism  is  ethical  choice,  i.e.  the  choice  between  Human  Factor  and  Animal  Factor. These  two  factors  are  combined  in  human‘s  ethical  morality.  Human  Factor  is  the superior  one  and  Animal  Factor  is  the  interior  one,  so  the  former  can  control  the  latter, thus human can own ethical consciousness. People‘s reason gradually becomes mature in the  process  that  they  evolve  from  ape  to  human,  and  with  the  help  of  ethical consciousness,  they  evolve  into  independent  higher  animal.  But  in  this  process,  human never get rid of the existence of Animal Factor.
